For a long time you wouldn’t find anything other than petrol-powered hot hatches. It was only in the 00s that the idea of a hot diesel hatchback started to take shape, as Volkswagen introduced it’s Pumpe Düse technology to the Golf. Suddenly you could have huge turbo-assisted torque and mid-range shove with high MPG, making some petrol-powered competitors look very weedy and expensive to run in comparison.

Skoda Fabia vRS diesel
The first Fabia vRS was unusual because it used diesel torque rather than petrol revs, broadening the hot hatch formula toward performance and economy. A bit like having your cake and eating it, with a scoop of ice cream on the side.
